What is the Green Homes Grant?

The government recently announced a new scheme called the Green Homes Grant Scheme, where homeowners and landlords can be eligible to gain vouchers of up to £10,000 in order to be able to make their homes more energy efficient. The scheme is being launched in order to create thousands of new jobs and help the UK meet its 2050 target of achieving net zero carbon emissions.

Heres what we know so far

At the moment there is little detail available for homeowners at the moment, however we do that homeowners and landlords will both be able to apply for the scheme from September.

The grants will cover at least two thirds of the cost of the improvements, up to £5,000 per household. However, for lower income households it will be more, with the vouchers covering the full cost of improvements, up to £10,000.

Homeowners will apply online and be directed to accredited local installers, who will provide a quote for the work. Once the work is approved, a voucher for the government’s share of the cost will be issued.

What will be covered under the grant?

Double glazing seems to be a strong contender for the scheme and will be included in something that homeowners can use the grant for. At the moment it isn’t yet known whether the grants will be able to be used for other energy-efficient measures such as warm roofs.

Since the announcement of the scheme, scams have been making the rounds and targeting homeowners with promises about the Green Homes Grant. Some homeowners have received scam calls, emails and texts saying that they are eligible for the grants. You need to ensure that you are diligent of these calls and recognise that they are scams.

Make sure you are using a trusted company as genuine companies will not know whether you’re eligible until full details are announced. You won’t be able to sign up before it launches in September, so anyone that says otherwise is not trustworthy.

If you’re not sure that a call or email you have received is genuine, then make sure you check the details of the individual or company first. Keep an eye out for government announcements about this scheme and if are saying you can sign up before the scheme launches in September then please be wary as this is not the case. You can report scams to Action Fraud online, or phone 0300 123 2040. It shares information with the police about scams and can prevent others for falling for the scam in the future.
