Bow & Bay Windows for homes in Cumbria

A bay window is a window space projecting outward from the main walls of a building, forming a “bay” in a room. Typically consisting of three glass panels, a large central fixed pane and two smaller side windows, they are built into the structural foundations of the house. This design creates extra floor space inside and allows light to enter from multiple angles.

The main difference is the shape and structure:

• Bay Windows: Usually consist of three panels set at sharp angles, creating a squared or polygonal look. They are part of the house’s footprint.
• Bow Windows: Made from four, five, or six smaller panels that form a gentle, curved arc. These often “float” off the wall rather than extending the floorboards, making them easier to retro-fit to a standard window opening.

Because bay windows are more complex to manufacture and install than flat windows, they are a larger investment. Prices depend on the size, the number of “facets” (segments), and whether you choose uPVC or premium Aluminium. Structural support (such as bay poles) and decorative leadwork can also influence the final quote.

Maintenance is the same as a standard window, clean the glass and frames with soapy water and check the external sealant once a year. If your bay window has a small “lead top” roof, we recommend clearing any fallen leaves or debris from it annually to prevent drainage issues.

Yes. While it involves more work, we can often install a “bow window” conversion. This uses a reinforced timber head and sill to project the window outward from your flat wall, instantly adding character and a wider view to your room. Absolutely. Modern bay windows from Keswick Superglaze feature high-performance double glazing and weather-tight seals. Because they have more glass surface area than flat windows, we use Low-E glass to ensure they trap heat effectively during the winter.

Often, yes. Because bay windows project outward, they carry a lot of weight. We use load-bearing bay poles (internal structural supports) to ensure the window safely supports the weight of the wall or roof above it, meeting all building regulations.

Since bay windows have angles, standard straight curtain rails won’t work. Most homeowners opt for custom-curved tracks or individual Roman or Venetian blinds fitted to each window segment. This maintains the “shape” of the bay without blocking the floor space.
