How to Keep Your Windows and Conservatory Gleaming in Summer
Summer in Cumbria means longer days, sunnier skies (well… mostly), and the perfect time to give your home a refresh. One of the easiest ways to brighten things up? Give your windows and conservatory some well-deserved TLC.
Not only will it boost your home’s curb appeal, but it can also help you spot signs of wear and tear, especially on older glazing. So grab your bucket, and let’s get those windows gleaming.
1. Don’t Clean Windows in Direct Sunlight
It might be tempting to start as soon as the sun comes up, but cleaning glass in full sunlight causes streaks and smears. Aim for early morning or late afternoon when the sun is softer and the glass cooler to the touch.
2. Use the Right Tools (No Kitchen Roll!)
Forget the newspaper myth, what you really need is a microfibre cloth or squeegee for a streak-free finish. And if you’re using ladders, always stay safe or call in a professional.
DIY Glass Cleaner: Mix equal parts white vinegar and warm water with a dash of washing-up liquid for a powerful, streak-busting solution.
3. Don’t Forget the Frames and Sills
Whether you have timber or uPVC frames, cleaning around the edges helps prevent mould, moss, and weather damage. If you’ve recently installed Rehau uPVC trade windows, good news: they’re low-maintenance, so a wipe with soapy water is all it takes.
Older frames? If you’re scrubbing them every summer and still not happy with the look, it might be time to upgrade.
Rehau windows don’t rot, warp or discolour. They’re perfect for Cumbrian homes looking for a long-lasting upgrade at a reasonable price.
4. Conservatory Roof Looking a Bit Green?
Summer is the best time to tackle moss, algae, and grime build-up on your conservatory roof. A soft brush or telescopic sponge with warm soapy water should do the trick—just avoid pressure washers, which can damage seals and roofing materials.
Top Tip: Thinking about replacing your old glass or polycarbonate roof? Solid roof conservatories are easier to maintain, reduce sun glare, and keep your space cooler in summer and warmer in winter. Win-win.
5. Check for Wear and Tear
While you're cleaning, take a moment to check your seals, hinges and locks. If your windows are draughty or your conservatory feels more like a greenhouse, your glazing may need attention.
