Window and door lifespan

How long do windows and doors last?

There is no set length of time that windows and doors last. Many different factors effect their lifespan. The good news is however that over the last fifty years, technology has been able to advance our materials and products so that they are built to be more superior and last longer.

So first, what factors affect the products longevity.

Location

The location of these windows and doors will affect how long they will last. For example, a window or door that is on a coastal property will have a shorter lifespan due to acidic saltwater than a window that is somewhere else, like in the countryside.

Quality of materials

Windows and doors that are made from reputable manufacturers with quality materials are always going to last a lot longer than those that don’t. If you get a few prices for windows and doors and you think a price is too good to be true – it probably is.

Quality of installation

Doors and windows that are installed incorrectly or not to a quality standard will have a shorter lifespan than those that are done to a high standard. The door or window will only last a long time if it sits correctly in the opening, with the correct fixings and appropriate sealing. Badly fitted products could allow water to seep in, causing damp problems or could result in some of the benefits of these products not taking effect, like lessening noise pollution.

Type of windows or doors

Different types of windows and doors will have different lifespans, mainly due to the robustness of the materials used to create it.

PVC double glazed windows and doors are a popular choice in the UK as they are low maintenance and energy efficient. They have a lifespan of 25-30 years. This could be increased if they are in a sheltered location and not subject to any extreme weather. However, if it is faced with extreme weather then the lifespan could be reduced to around 20 years.

Aluminium windows and doors have sleeker durable frames, so offer a more contemporary style and are able to support larger areas of glass. The frames are exceptionally strong which means they are extremely durable and can last up to 45 years, so are a great investment.

Some properties in conservation areas and listed buildings can be bound to timber windows and doors, however the result is a very beautiful aesthetic. Many period properties choose timber windows in order to maintain the look of the house. Timber is a more high maintenance material and does need more attention that others but, with the correct care, can have a lifespan of 50 years or more.
